The floral postharvest educational program called PRO Institute Miami ended on October 20, 2009.  It is time to share some observations made during the tour portions of the program when various floral businesses in and around Miami International Airport were visited.  The businesses toured were Armellini Industries, Bouquet Collection, C.H. Robinson, Esmeralda Farms, Lynx Global, Maersk Line, MIA Perishables Center, Packaging Corporation of America / Harrison Packaging, Tampa Cargo, and The USA Bouquet Company.  The following is a summary of these observations as related to proper flower care and handling. The growing traffic between Asia and South America is encouraging smaller airports in the region, such as MidAmerica St Louis and Chicago Rockford, to join the cargo race. Correspondent Ian Putzger reports on where the airports stand in the battle for Asia-Latin freight

MidAmerica St. Louis Airport plans to add a second cargo flight from South America by the end of the year, Director Tim Cantwell said Wednesday.

A year ago this month, the St. Clair County airport welcomed its first intercontinental air cargo flight with the arrivals of tons of fresh flowers from Bogotá, Colombia, through Miami-based Teqflor International Logistics. Read the rest of this entry »

The gears are in motion to create a cooperative transportation system for California’s cut flowers, a plan that growers see as a potential savior for competing in the global marketplace.

The aim is to become more efficient by reducing the number of trucks on the road and ensuring trucks are filled to capacity, said Tom French, a consultant hired by the California Cut Flower Commission.
