The floral postharvest educational program called PRO Institute Miami ended on October 20, 2009. It is time to share some observations made during the tour portions of the program when various floral businesses in and around Miami International Airport were visited. The businesses toured were Armellini Industries, Bouquet Collection, C.H. Robinson, Esmeralda Farms, Lynx Global, Maersk Line, MIA Perishables Center, Packaging Corporation of America / Harrison Packaging, Tampa Cargo, and The USA Bouquet Company. The gears are in motion to create a cooperative transportation system for California’s cut flowers, a plan that growers see as a potential savior for competing in the global marketplace.
The aim is to become more efficient by reducing the number of trucks on the road and ensuring trucks are filled to capacity, said Tom French, a consultant hired by the California Cut Flower Commission.
